7.6 Security and Safety procedures



  • Always ensure you sign the Sign In/Out Register located at each facility or external site.

  • Please take the time to familiarise yourself with the Fire and Emergency procedures of facility or external site if you are assigned frequently at that site.

In the event of a situation created where you feel threatened:

  • Always remain calm.

  • Walk away.

  • Report to the facility, external site manager or Therapeutic Dog Services Manager.

If the situation is serious, follow staff member’s directions and:

  • Take note of any details that may be helpful to investigations after the incident.

  • Any incident no matter how small should be reported.

Ambulance, Fire, and Police: 000 Police Assistance: 131 444 Poison Information Centre: 13 11 26 Fire Evacuation Plan The following steps are to be carried out in the event of a fire:

  • Stay Calm.

  • Evacuate immediately.

  • Close door and alert appropriate Manager or Supervising Staff Member.

  • Clients, Volunteers and Staff to evacuate via safest exit and assemble at the emergency

  • Evacuation point designated for facility or external site

  • Manager or Supervising Staff Member to account for all Personnel and Clients.

  • Stay out of the building until given the all clear by appropriate authorities.

  • It is the Staff, Volunteers and Clients (or their Carer/s) responsibility to study emergency evacuation plan and to be aware of all exits in the event of a fire.

Bomb Threat The following steps are to be carried out in the event of a bomb threat:

  • Stay Calm.

  • Evacuate immediately.

  • Close door and alert appropriate Manager or Supervising Staff Member.

  • Clients, Volunteers and Staff to evacuate via safest exit and assemble at the emergency

  • Evacuation point designated for facility or external site

  • Manager or Supervising Staff Member to account for all Personnel and Clients.

  • Stay out of the building until given the all clear by appropriate authorities.

  • It is the Staff, Volunteers and Clients (or their Carer/s) responsibility to study emergency evacuation plan and to be aware of all exits in the event of a bomb threat.

Accident & Incidents The following steps are to be carried out in the event of an accident or incident: If you witness an accident or incident regarding a Client, Volunteer or Staff member, please notify the Manager or Supervising Staff Member as soon as possible. The situation must be assessed, and the following steps taken:

  • Stay calm.

  • Alert appropriate Manager or Supervising Staff Member.

  • Contact emergency phone number from Staff/Volunteer or Client file.

  • An accident/incident report is to be completed by the Manager and Supervising Staff Member.

  • The required accident/incident report is to be signed by all facility or external site Management, Staff and Volunteers in attendance at the time of the accident.

  • Please also file an accident incident report with Therapeutic Dog Services so management can follow up.
